Commiphora molmol is a small tree or large shrub native to several countries
in eastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The bark contains reservoirs of
oleo-gum resin. The oleo-gum resin can be collected when it seeps out from
natural cracks or deliberate cuts in the bark. The yellowish liquid hardens to
form reddish-brown masses.
Myrrh is one of the oldest known remedies, used for incense and embalming
since ancient times. Before the first century BC, Myrrh was used to prevent
the fermentation of wine to vinegar. The Romans used Myrrh for many
more applications than the Greeks. Myrrh was used in speech as a term of
endearment: “my myrrh, my cinnamon” – perhaps similar to calling someone
“honey” today.
Ingredients: Commiphora myrrha
